Spaghelli is the latest project of rapper Steve Pelly and bassist Phil Quinton. Steve and Phil had met at West Herts College, Watford when Steve was in his first band, A Space + A Half, in 1991. Phil became a fan of the band, and in particular of Steve's writing which was both personal and political (with leanings somewhere between The Green Party and plain anarchy), and became involved in the band as roadie, studio engineer, video editor and eventually joined as singer, duelling with Steve on the mics. When the band split in 1994 Steve did some solo recordings (under the name Mr. Dogbite) with great lyrics but terrible backing music. Phil reckoned he could do better.
Steve went on to join trash metal band Sonic Jihad in the mid-90s. They toured Europe in '96 then split. His next band was upbeat punk rock combo Copcar Pileup who played many festivals, tiny south London venues and animal rights benefits between the millennium and 2003, when they split. In 2002 he crossed paths with Phil again who suggested recording some new solo material with a view to eventually doing gigs with some live musicians. By the end of 2003 they had recorded a fairly experimental home studio album (the emphasis on 'mental') and completed a 5-track white label album in 2006 entitled "The Calm Before The Storm".
Spaghelli is about racism, corporate crime, political corruption, alcoholism, sleep paralysis, madness and surrealism.
Spaghelli has now taken on live bandmembers and can be seen live in 2007 as Spaghelli and the Dogbytes!
